Towards a low CO2 energy production
SCK•CEN cooperates in various ways in the development of technologies that can provide a solution to the energy problem affecting future generations. In the long term these will potentially provide us with the necessary sustainable energy in a safe, efficient, low carbon manner. These future energy sources are a key aspect of the fight against global warming.
Various progressive technologies are in the pipeline. We contribute to the development of innovative nuclear fission and fusion reactors via material and fuel research in our BR2 reactor. MYRRHA, a flexible multifunctional particle accelerator driven nuclear research facility is being built to expand our activities even further in future.
SCK•CEN also contributes in a high degree to the success of
renewable energy by
irradiating silicon, an essential chemical element in the electronic equipment of
solar and wind energy systems.
